Mountain climbing, not something for the feint hearted but the only way to experience some of the most breathtaking views on the planet. The world is dotted with famous peaks that thousands choose to work their way up every year; this article takes a look at four of the most spectacular mountain climbs you can enjoy on an adventure travel holiday. Mera Peak Climb
Kilimanjaro
This flat-topped mountain is known world wide for being Africa’s highest mountain. Kilimanjaro is located on the border between Tanzania and Kenya, with Tanzania to the south and Kenya to the north, and is formed of three extinct volcanoes known as Mawenzi, Kibo and Shira. The climb to the peak, 19,340 feet above sea level, really is an exhilarating and there are a number of routes to get there. Off all the routes it’s the popular Machame Route that is the most famous and easiest of the mountain trails.
Iztaccíhuatl
Next up we have the Mexican mountain of Iztaccíhuatl, which translates as “white woman,” located 800 miles to the south of the US border. The mountain’s name comes from its distinct looks, with the snowcapped peaks looking like a sleeping woman from a distance; the peaks form the head, breasts, and feet. Iztaccíhuatl is the seventh tallest mountain in South America, standing at 17,159 feet and it’s famous in the region for being one of the most attractive climbs in Mexico.
Everest
Mount Everest, the highest peak on the planet and famed world wide for its incredible height and challenging climbs. Although not a challenging today as it was back in 1953 when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay first reached the peak, the South Col route they used still claims a number of lives every year. Over 2,000 people have successfully reached the peak of this famous mountain but you don’t have to reach the top to experience Everest. Everest base camp climbs are becoming an increasingly popular choice and make for a great way to experience a little of this breathtaking destination.
Mount Khuiten
The final mountain on our list is the beautiful Mount Khuiten. Many see the approach to this mountain to be a scenic experience on its own, with the rolling green Mongolian steppes, but the climb to the top doesn’t disappoint either. Straddling three countries Russia, China and Mongolia, this impressive peak offers up the best of the surrounding golden steppes. The area is also famous for the hospitality of the local Kazakh nomads.
